Introduction Sesame is commonly known as “Till”. Its botanical name is Sesamum indicum. It is one of the earliest domesticated plants. It is a short duration crop grown throughout the year. The seeds of the plant yield edible oil.In India sesame cultivation spread across all the parts except in northern and north-eastern region. It is grown in different seasons in different parts of the country. On the whole it is grown all the three seasons. However, majority of sesame is grown as a kharif crop under rainfed conditions in central and southern parts of the country including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. However, a small amount of sesame is cultivated as a summer crop under irrigated conditions in eastern and southern parts of the country covering states of West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Maximum arrivals of crop are in the months of October to January. However, in certain states arrivals are also reported in the months of February to June.
